In 1991, about 176,000 people were in health-related facilities. This number increased to about 233,000 in 1981 and 280,000 (1.03% of the total population) in 1991.

Women aged 75 or over make up 58% of all residents of special-care homes. At the ages of 90 and over, long-term residents of health-related facilities are 46% or more of the population of these ages, while in the 55 to 59 age group, less than 1% live in such facilities.

Long-term residents of health-related facilities are a larger proportion of the never married than of other marital statuses, and of the separated, widowed or divorced than of the married.
